All the other monarchs of Europe were very disapproving of the French Revolution and terrified by it. They knew that what was happening in France could also happen in their own counties. Therefore, they decided to stay neutral (except Austria, which declared war on France, but didn't help the royal family).

They were afraid that if they openly opposed the revolution, their own people might revolt against them. They also couldn't support the French revolution, because the main purpose of the revolution was to get rid of the monarchial and aristocratic system in France. As hereditary rulers themselves, the other European monarchs of course couldn't support that.

Some saw the handwriting on the wall and made an immediate exit from France bound for one of their estates elsewhere as emigres. Certainly they lost their French property, but they did escape with their lives.

Some foolishly believed that their faithful servants and loyal peasants that they had always treated well would protect them from the oncoming mob. What they failed to realize was that the upstairs maid was already heading for the forest with Madame's jewel box, the scullery girl had exited with the silverware and the downstairs maid was upstairs trying on some of Madame's best silks. About that time, the mob was entering under the guidance of some of the Lord's best field laborers.

Some rallied together and tried a counter rebellion against the National Convention only to be met by a "whiff of Grapeshot"from Napoleon's massed artillery. There were 1,400 Royalist supporters that died that day and the rest cleared the street.
