Her first job out of school in November 2008 was as a freelance commercial artist in Chicago, Illinois for two years. In August 1912 she was hired as the drawing supervisor for Amarillo, Texas schools responsible for art education of hundreds of pupils in Amarillo's half-dozen schools; that lasted one school year. For four summers, from 1913 through 1916, she taught as as as art assistant at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia. After that she was discovered as an artist and either sold art or worked on contracted art projects.
