2 things really: The vastness of the country....& the winter climate. As long as the Germans were on the offensive they were going to win the war against the Russians......... so they laid siege to Leningrad for the better part of 3 years..... They didnt quite get to Moscow... and they were defeated and counter attacked at Stalingrad..... A very bitter & vastly expensive war indeed, and many many atrocities (On both sides) that went largely unnoticed. One must think that Hitler didn't trust Joe Stalin.... & that was mutual & History shows both were right !
quite simply yes. it opened up a second front for the Germans to fight on, stretching their rescources and demanding more of the German army and industry than they could cope with. it ultimately cost Germany the war.
however the reason given by nazi Germany for the invasion was that it was a pre-emptive attack. wether Hitler believed the ussr was going to invade or if it was just an excuse to wage war against communist Russia will probably never be known for sure. although the majority of historians believe the latter.
Yes. Hitler wasn't prepared for so big resistance from USSR (there wasn't such a thing as Russia then). USSR beat him in long fights at Stalingrad and regained control of the region. The Germany was now surrounded from all sides.

The invasion of Poland came first. The genocide followed later. ------------------------------ The real question would be: Did the Holocaust or the invasion of the Soviet Union come first? or rather: Did the Holocaust cause the invasion of the Soviet Union or did the invasion of the Soviet Union cause the Holocaust? (because there is no clear answer)
