The action began as a Battle of Encounter. Neither side knew the other was there. When the South was unable to seize the high ground of the surrounding hills, it tried a Battle of Maneuver around the Union flanks. Unable to do so because of increasing Federal reinforcements, Lee attempted a Battle of Penetration, hoping to smash the Northern lines by direct assault and create a breech which he could exploit. This, too, failed, forcing Lee to make an ordered retreat back into Virginia, never to invade the North again.
