Ireland in 1918 would have been rife with political tension following the Easter rising in 1916, Irish independence would not come for another four years and large amounts of guerrilla war fare was to follow. Economically Ireland was still under the rule of the crown but wouldn't have been particularly wealthy, heavy taxes from the British Government would cripple local industry and most Irish people would be employed in menial jobs.
