US President James Buchanan has not been treated well by history. What he did contribute was that he won the 1856 presidential election defeating the radical Republican John Fremont. Fremont would have been a disaster for the US. With that said, there is one important contribution by Buchanan. He could have recognized the Confederacy and he made the right choice in not doing so.
