As a young man, King George II was quite handsome- he was tall, with a high forehead, clear open features and large blue eyes, with a full, slightly wide mouth. He wore the short periwig with a small pigtail that was fashionable in the mid / late 18th Century, although in his 20s & 30s he was able to use his REAL hair in this style, bleached white!! In later life, he put on quite a bit of weight and became rather jowly. As an old man, when his bouts of insanity had become too frequent for him to make any more public appearances, he retreated from public view and let his looks and appearance go astray. The poor man was too deeply affected by his mental illness to care about what he looked like any longer- he grew a long white beard, lost a lot of weight, and became wrinkled, with bushy white eyebrows and sagging cheeks. No longer clad in the fine gold-braided tail-jackets and white britches that he had worn when younger, he dressed in a heavy black gown with a matching skullcap. mIt was a sad decline from the vibrant, youthful, dynamic young King that he had once been.
