The Union fought to protect and uphold the U.S. constitution.

the South sceded when Lincoln became president because they thought that he would deny them their voice in government and destroy their way of life. they fought not just for slavery but to protect their whole way of living, their families and the land that their family had lived on for generations.

So you see it was not just about slavery
