There were (and are) abuses of power by the Catholic church, such as the selling of indulgences and immorality on the part of the church hierarchy.

.

Catholic AnswerMartin Luther attached the Catholic Church because of sin, mostly his own. He was an Augustinian Friar under solemn vows (which he had made voluntarily after years of prayer and reflection) of poverty, chastity, and obedience. He left his Order without even asking for permission or a dispensation from his vows, and proceeded to flaunt all of them - in a rather spectacular fashion. M. Luther had severe problems with Christian morality and rather than repenting, believing in the power of Christ to save him; he rewrote Christianity into something else (now called Protestantism and Lutheranism) in which he didn't have to live by the Gospel and could claim he was saved despite himself. He attacked the Catholic Church in an attempt to deny responsibility for his actions.

221 The power of Romanism was shattered by Martin Luther, of immortal memory.

Martin Luther is undoubtedly an outstanding figure in history. But the immortal memory of Luther will become less and less pleasant as the facts concerning him become known. Those who idealize Luther can do so only by ignoring an immense amount of inconvenient information. He was a priest of the Catholic Church, but one who was not faithful to his obligations even as a Christian. On his own admissions he was a victim of both immorality and drunkenness; and he was the most intolerant of men. Far from granting liberty of conscience, he refused to allow anyone to think differently from himself, and coolly said, "Whoever teaches otherwise than I teach is a child of hell."

What are 4 differences between the Catholic church and Luther's teachings?

Roman Catholic AnswerThe Catholic Church as taught nothing but that which She has received from Her founder, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, for over twenty centuries. Martin Luther taught his own philosophy and religion in order to justify that kind of life he wanted to live. The Catholic Church teaches that man is justified by the gratuitous gift of God in baptism and that from that moment on justification is a process in which he must cooperate, by the Grace given him by God, in his own justification. This is taught all through Scripture. Martin Luther denied all of this, saying that the only thing necessary was to believe, and ignore the rest of Scripture, and that you will die and instantly go to heaven. The Catholic Church has always taught the doctrine that Our Blessed Savior taught, in that, God gives us the grace to cooperate with Him and to become perfect - as nothing imperfect can enter heaven. If we fail to complete that in this life, God, in His infinite mercy, perfects us after death, in a process called "purgatory". Also, we can help those not yet perfect through our prayers, this is because we are all part of the Mystical Body of Christ, and are all being saved together. Martin Luther denied all of this, he denied that man was capable of being perfected. He denied that man was capable of cooperating with God's grace. He viewed man as a totally worthless thing - a pile of manure covered with snow (pardon me, his words, not mine). All differences between the teachings can be reduced to: the teachings of the Catholic Church are those of God, they are divine and capable, through the might of God, in saving a person. The teachings of Martin Luther are so many figments of his sin obsessed imagination and can do nothing, as he himself taught.

Why did Martin Luther leave the Catholic church?

Some Church leaders had become corrupt. Pope Alexander VI, for example, admitted that he had fathered several children, also, many Popes were pursuing worldly affairs. Priests and monks were so poorly educated that they could scarcely read. Others broke their vows by marrying, gambling and drinking to excess.Luther decided to take a public stand about reformation because of the actions of a friar named Johann Tetzel.Tetzelwas raising money to rebuild St. Peter's cathedral by selling indulgences. An indulgence was a pardon. It released a sinner from the penalty that a priest imposed for sins. Indulgences were not supposed to affect God's right to judge. But Tetzelgave people the impression that by buying indulgences, they could buy their way to heaven.AnswerAll of the above is what is commonly put in books these days, the reality is quite different. Indeed there was more than a little ignorance on the part of the clergy, monks, and friars, unfortunately, Martin Luther was one of them. When he issued his 95 Theses it was a collection of Luther's objections; however, they are pretty equally ignorant of the Catholic Church. Some of them called for things that were already Church doctrine, others were so off the wall as to be ludicrous. Martin, himself, was an example of what needed to be reformed in the Church, he voluntarily took lifelong vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, but then left his friary without even trying to seek permission, and proceeded to lead a sinful life of drunken debauchery. Fr. Johann Tetzeldid none of the things that Martin Luther said that he did. One could always earn an indulgence for the three works of penance: fasting, prayer, and almsgiving.Due to the stink that Martin Luther raised, you can no longer get one for almsgiving.Indulgences are a release from the temporal punishment due for already forgiven sin, and are still regularly issued. Bottom line? Martin Luther never wanted to "reform" the Church. The Bishops and the Pope repeatedlyoffered him all kinds of concessions including repeated offers to sit down and talk with him. He pompously refused to talk with them, and made a big deal out of burning their gracious invitations. Martin Luther was never serious, and no more intended Christianity than the man in the moon. From his own pen he wrote that man should sin greatly, Martin Luther threw books out of the Bible, and rewrote the ones that remained.

Ask us anythingWhich statement about the assassination of Martin Luther King is true?

A.He was killed while trying to organize poor workers.

Where did Martin Luther first announced his opposition to the Catholic Church?

The chruch was too rich:The church owned about one third of all of the land in England. An ordinary peasant had to give 10% of their harvest ( a tithe) to the priest every year. Some felt that the bishops, priests and monks lived in luxury whilst the poor suffered. The priest didn't lead a very holy life:Soem priests had a few jobs and neglected their work. Villagers once told the Bishop of Hereford.'The priest put his horses and sheep in the churchyard... he was away for 6 weeks and made no arrangement for a substitute. Sir John (the priest) spends his time in the taverns (pubs) and there his tongue is loosened to the scande of everyone. He is living with a woman Margaret and he cannot read nor write and so cannot look after the parishers' souls'Ordinary people did not think soem priests were setting a very good example to the people living in the village or town.Ordinary people couldn't understand church services:The Bible was written in Latin and the church services were held in this language as well. People said they found it difficult to feel close to God if they couldn't understand what was being said in church.Poor People couldn't afford indulgences:When a person died, they went to heaven or hell. It was thought you passed through a place called purgatory on the way. In purgatory, people believed you were punished for any sins you may of commited whilst you were alive. It wasn't meant to be a nice place to stay very long. When you were alive, you could buy indulgences from a bishop. This meant that you travelled through purgatory quicker. Rich people could buy lots of indulgences. Poor people didn't think it was fair. They thought that they were being punished for being poor..Catholic AnswerMartin Luther basically was angry with the Catholic Church because he was a very misguided soul who could not reconcile his life with the teachings of Christ. So he changed the teachings of Christ in order to not feel guilty about the way he lived. There were things wrong with the Church at the time, but you do not leave the Church that Jesus Christ founded because its members are sinning and form your own. Martin Luther, on the other hand, had, after years of prayer and reflection, made solemn vows of lifelong poverty, chastity, and obedience. He then left his monastery without even asking permission, and proceeded to violate everyone of his vows in a very public, disgusting way: throwing away his salvation with both hands, and dragging others with him. He was angry with the Catholic Church as they were trying to hold him to a moral life that Our Blessed Lord requested of him, and he vowed himself to, and they were holding him to it, and he didn't want to follow it. .from Radio Replies, by Fathers Rumble and Carty, 1942221 The power of Romanism was shattered by Martin Luther, of immortal memory.Martin Luther is undoubtedly an outstanding figure in history. How were Martin Luthers beliefs different from the beliefs of the Catholic Church?

That is pretty simple, Martin Luther was trying to remove Christ's duly appointed Vicar over His Church: the pope in Rome, and replace him, as the final arbiter of religious doctrine with himself!

Why was the Catholic Church angry at Martin luther's attempts to stop the practice of indulgences?

.Catholic AnswerFirst of all, let's try and get some things straight. The Catholic Church is the Mystical Body of Christ, it is here to bring people to God, and God, through the Sacraments and prayer, to the people; in other words, it does not get "angry". The Catholic Church is the Love of God incarnate in His Church. Secondly, Martin Luther did not try to stop the practice of indulgences, if you actually read his 95 Theses, he was all for indulgences, he was trying to stop the abuse involved in some individual's preaching and use of indulgences, he certainly was not trying to stop them. The Holy Father, at that time, tried to straighten things out with Martin Luther, and due to Luther's intransigent and refusal to listen to reason, they failed as Martin Luther went further and further afield into outright heresy and refused to reconsider his positions. So, the short answer to your question is that the question itself is nonsense and doesn't make sense - in other words, No.

Is the Lutheran a protestant church or a reformed church?

Lutherans began as a movement to follow the teachings of Martin Luther, a German Catholic Priest trying to solve systemic problems in the Catholic Church. The Reformed Church is theologically very similar, but was started by the Dutch. They are both major Protestant Denominations. Neither one is considered a part of the other.

Did anyone take Luther seriously about trying to overthrow the power of the Catholic Church?

Sure did. That is partly why he became president.

What did Martin Luther do to try to fix the Church?

Martin Luther did not believe that the church was necessary to be a Catholic, as the ceremonies and rituals were unnecessary. He also didn't believe in paying to get rid of your sins, or for penance, which is what the church believed in.

What church practices did Martin Luther become outraged by?

Attached below is a English copy of Martin Luther's 95 Theses which contain the Church practices that he was questioning, I think "outraged" might be a bit over the top. Most the practices he was questioning were connected with indulgences, pardons, and confession, however, a quick look through his 95 Theses even by a first year seminarian would quickly reveal that Martin Luther really didn't know what he was talking about, many of the things that he asked for were already Church teaching. I believe that the practice that Martin Luther was most upset about was the fact that the Church asked him to lead a moral life as Luther spent the rest of his life trying to justify why he didn't have to repent and reform his life.

Where did Martin Luther oppose the Catholics?

Another answer from our community:Martin Luther's "stand" against the Catholic Church was that the Catholic Church stood for the Gospel and morality, and Martin Luther failed at both, so he rewrote the Gospel and made up a new "Christianity" which did not call him to be a moral person to be saved.

What is the difference between Martin Luther and a German Catholic Bishop?

.Catholic AnswerProbably salvation, although that is entirely up to God. A German Catholic Bishop from whatever century is a Catholic and trying to abide by the guidelines that Our Blessed Lord left us for salvation, and teach them to others. Martin Luther was a heretic, who spurned his solemn vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, and married a nun, without receiving permission to leave his religious order. He then proceeded to preach his heresy to such an extent that the Church was forced to excommunicate him. He deliberately left the teaching of Christ's Church and preached his heresy to others. The German Catholic Bishop, one would suppose, was preaching the teaching of Our Blessed Lord and Savior, not his own ideas.

What had happened to make Martin Luther question the religion he believed in and loved?

There were abuses in the Caltholic church that he wanted to fix and from trying to fix them, a new religion started.

Why was mar tan Luther excommunicated and declared a heretic?

Martin was excommunicated because he was trying to go against most of the teachings of the Catholic church. (Which was caused by the 95 Theses, which Luther posted in Germany), The Church finally excommunicated him in 1521, and Luther was later banished in 1522. On 15 June 1520, the Pope warned Luther that he risked excommunication unless he recanted 41 heretical sentences drawn from his writings, including the 95 Theses, within 60 days. Luther set fire to the Popes warning at Wittenberg on 10 December 1520, Martin Luther was excommunicated by Pope Leo X on 3 January 1521 for heresy and apostasy, and for leading others astray.
