George S. Patton was a three star, Lieutenant General at the time of the landings in Normandy. He was not promoted to full General, four stars, until the spring of 1945.
A three star general in the WWII US Army in Europe normally commanded a corps in a field army. Part of the deception cover paraded before the Germans to deceive them about Allied intentions, making them think the Normandy landings were a diversion for a later landing at the Pas de Calais, had them believing Patton was commanding the mythical First US Army Group (FUSAG), not merely a single field army.
Only Omar Bradley and Jacob Devers actually commanded American army groups in Europe.
