Powhatan pretty much left them alone. I think he figured that they would die from the bad water and disease . He was fairly right. Within 6 months there were only 34 men left alive of the 104 who came. It wasn't until after his death that the brother of Powhatan attacked the colony. The story about Smith is also not true. He did NOT save Jamestown. He was only there a very few months and he lied about his contribution to the settlement in a book he wrote several years later. He also made up the story about Pocahontas and she died young so couldn't refute his story. The man who did save Jamestown was the husband of Pocahontas and gave tobacco seeds to the colony. Matoaka was the beautiful and lively daughter of Powhatan, ruler of the land that the English named Virginia. "Pocahontas" was her childhood nickname, translated as "little wanton," meaning she was playful and hard to control. When she was born, Powhatan sent her mother home to her own village, to raise Pocahontas. That was his custom. When she was about school age, Pocahontas left her mother to live in her father's capital, with with her older brothers and sisters. As they grew up, Powhatan appointed some as chiefs of his other tribes. Pocahontas became her father's favorite, "the apple of his eye".

Pocahontas is most famous for saving the life of Captain John Smith. This story has been retold many times in many ways. Disney's Pocahontas was their first attempt to rewrite a historic event, instead of a fairy tale. As usual, the Disney version resembled the original just enough to confuse everyone.

Pocahontas, also known as Rebecca Rolfe, was an american Indian. She was the daughter of the renown and respected Indian Chief Powhatan, the leader of a number of tribal nations along the Tidewater area of Virginia.

The youthful Pocahontas admired and loved John Smith, an Englishman, during the peak of 'american/Indian' wars, when she was captured and held for ransom. Their friendship flourished and during her extended captivity in the English speaking community, Pocahontas converted to Christianity and was given the name Rebecca.

Historical anecdotes tell the story that in 1607 Pocahontas saved the life of Englishman John Smith, by placing her head across his when her father (Chief Powhatan), was about to decapitate him, begging her father to spare him.

Seven years later, in 1614, Pocahontas became the first legally recorded 'interracial' marriage in american history when she became married to Englishman, John Rolfe. Despite her granted freedom, Pocahontas (Rebecca), chose to remain with the English and gave birth to their son, Thomas Rolfe, in 1615.

Pocahontas and her father, Chief Powatan, remained part of Virginia's lore. In the late 1800's their names were honoured by Virginia's great Norfolk & Western Railroad, naming their two elite streamliner passenger trains - the Pocahontas and the Powhatan Arrow, which ran from Norfolk, Virginia, to Cincinnati, Ohio.
