When Elizabeth ascended the throne 1558[?] she would, according to Anglican Catholic Historians , have liked to have brought back the Church to the last years of her Father, Henry! That is to Catholicism without the Pope![ O.Wakeman.] But the strength of the up and coming Calvinist group, in both Church and Parliament deterred her from even attempting to do this. Instead she let the protestant faction make a lot of noise, take over Parliament even make some inroads into the Church. She did however, refuse to give them any power or authority to even discuss religion in the House of Commons, saying that the Church matters were the business of the Bishops.

It is thought that she was aided by the fact that if the Calvinists went to far the next claimant was a Roman Catholic, otherwise she might have met the same fate as the unlucky Charles the First.
