the Flemish style is really a technique perfected but the masters in the Renascence primely in the county's of Flanders its a 7 layer Painting that starts with an under drawing then a glaze of umber then a layer where more umber is applied to make a tonal study then a gray layer followed by color layer then the finish details and finally a varnish

Rembrandt Paul Rubens are just two of the many Painters that used this technique

the primary reason for such a labor intensive study is that this style ages much slower then other types of painting many 20th century paintings are in poor condition in comparison to the 400 year old Flemish works
