Robert Edward Lee was the most famous Confederacy General in the Civil war. He was first a U.S. soldier, the became a General. He attended West Point, graduating second in his class (which is why he's known for his wits!). In 1862, he was made commander of the Confederacy
First, he was an excellent soldier in the USA war with Mexico and won many victories. Then when he became the South's commanding general in the USA civil war, in 1862, he drove Union Gen. George McClellan away from Richmond, Virginia, and back to Washington DC. He won many battles afterward, against numerically superior forces, but, he tried a frontal assault against Union Gen. George Meade's forces at Gettysburg in July 1863, and lost too many soldiers to win the battle or the war.
Robert E. Lee became commander of Confederate forces when the civil war started. He was number one in his academy class, had been considered a rising union officer, and was in command of the Union forces at Harper's Ferry. When the war started he went with the Confederate troops because his home state of VA was confederate. He was also married to the great grand daughter of George Washington. During the war his plantation became Arlington National cemetery for 92.00 in back taxes. The first of the Union dead were buried in his front yard. He is considered a major figure in American history.
He was number two in his class, and he did not become the commander until Johnston was wounded in 1862.
