Champlain was trying to find a trade route to the West Indies but came across Canada instead. Then, King Henry IV sent him back to Canada to explore and trade there. Sieur de Monts helped Champlain out on one of his voyages and the Natives helped out along the way too.

Actually, you both are quite right. His uncle and father was explorers and Samuel De Champlain wanted to become just like them. They inspired him to to become an explorer. He also wanted to support France since it was a poor country with no way to gain wealth until Samuel De Champlain went to Quebec. He was actually a geographer for King Henry IV.

His name is Samuel de Champlain NOT Champagne, a French man, he did all his exploring in what is now Canada, mostly along the upper Ottawa River and in Quebec.
Samuel de Champlain went exploring to find a route to Asia through North America, as well as to establish trading partnerships with Indigenous peoples and to expand French territories in the New World. He also sought to map and navigate the North American coastline for future colonization and settlement.
