Originally, he helped his father in the family cloth mercantile in Assisi. They he tried being a soldier for a while, until he was taken prisoner of war and spent some time in prison. While in prison he underwent a conversion and, upon release, became an itinerant preacher. He spent the rest of his short life evangelizing in Italy.
