Tojo approved the attack on Great Britain, the United States and the Dutch East Indies in 1941. Though they had early victories, the country faced severe losses as war went on. Tojo kept gathering all the administrative powers to himself. He gained dictatorial power. However his aggressive war policies were a failure, when Japan lost the war.

The ideology was complex but here are a few concepts they adhered to:

  • The war was conducted on behalf of the Emperor Hirohito by the Military.
  • The Japanese people who died in the war did it for the Emperor whom they considered to be a human God.
  • The male population was taught to be warriors and to adhere to the Samurai Warrior code from the time they were nine years old.
  • Japan wanted the raw materials, resources and oil other countries had so they opted to invade the nations which at them.
  • The Japanese soldier murdered innocent civilians they consider to be inferior to the Japanese.
  • Suicide was honorable and done when warriors had shamed the Emperor when they lost battles.
