It would have cost over a million or more American lives, a similar number of Japanese lives, and he had already authorized the use of chemical weapons during the invasion if the Japanese resisted as strongly as they had in the last several Pacific islands, so he thought it was best. It could also possibly avoid a division of Japan into communist and democratic zones, as had already happened in Europe and was happening in Korea, etc.
