Hiram Ulysses Grant, more commonly known as Ulysses S. Grant, held the military rank and title of Brigadier General of the Union army of the North during the United States Civil War.

In this capacity as head of the Union Army of the Potomac, Grant reports directly to President Lincoln. Grant is now in charge of all military operations. After the Civil War, Grant receives the new title of "General of all the Armies. This is done in July, 1866.
In June of 1861, US Grant was given command of the 21st Illinois Regiment. Grant was given the title of Colonel.
When President Lincoln had appointed US General Grant as the Union's general in chief, he was given the sacred title of Lieutenant General, used only for George Washington. Grant would not be able to capture Richmond unless he first defeated the Lee led Army of Northern Virginia.
