Today very little is known about his background as from a historical point of view he literally appeared out of no where. However it is known that he was a minor/distant member of Scottish nobility. It is possible that he was related to a man named Richard Wallace; records show that Richard came to Scotland in the 1130' under the service of Walter fitz Alan who became the high steward of Scotland appointed by King David I and some believe that Richard Wallace developed a good working relationship with both men and climb the social structure of Scotland as a result, and would explain the several areas of land owned by the Wallace'. Apart from this little is known there are different records which state different places of birth, fathers names, or date of birth.
