Apart from the March to the Sea (Nov-Dec 1864), there was no big, single achievement.

He had performed well at First Bull Run - which his side lost.

His next achievement was to become a good team-partner to U.S. Grant, and helped him liberate the Mississippi. As a reward, Grant made him an army commander in Chattanooga, and told him to destroy the Army of Tennessee. It was actually his failure to achieve this that prompted the March to the Sea.

When that was over, he invaded South Carolina, then North Carolina, taking the surrender of Joseph E. Johnston.

Aside from battlefield operations, he was notable for being one of the few people at the beginning who judged that it would be a long war. And he wrote a classic book of memoirs, though he never looked like the sort of person who would write a good book.

A major battle William Tecumseh sherman was in?

In July 1861, Sherman commanded a brigade at the First Battle of Bull Run (First Manassas). In April 1862, Sherman commanded a division which played a valiant and crucial role in the Battle of Shiloh. In Grant's Army of the Tennessee in 1862-63, Sherman also commanded forces in most of Grant's engagements including the Vicksburg campaign and the two captures of Jackson. General Grant recommended Sherman for promotion to brigadier-general of the regular army out of respect for his consistently faithful performance. Sherman replaced Grant in the taking of Chattanooga and Knoxville, the Meridian campaign, the Atlanta campaign, the famous "March to the Sea" (Savannah campaign), and the Carolinas campaign.

Was William Tecumseh Sherman a good citizen?

This is a difficult question because the military service rendered by William Tecumseh Sherman was at the time and still is controversial at every phase of his career. He served in the Seminole War. He served in California at the time of the Bear Republic and the Mexican War. He was the commanding general in Texas along with General Sheridan fighting Plains Native Americans following the Civil War. Sherman's most famous command was his Civil War "March to the Sea" through Georgia to Savannah. Foraging soldiers from his army without discipline were known as "Sherman's bummers". Torn up railroad rails were heated and bent around telegraph poles as "Sherman bowties". Cities were fired either by his troops or by defeated Confederates pursuing a scorched earth policy retreating before an advancing army. Sherman is attributed with the first modern "total war" against civilian populations. His most prominent act of citizenship without controversy was his absolute refusal to accept the Republican nomination for President. He was so passionately hated throughout the South that any administration he might inaugurate could have brought widespread rebellion. He famously said in 1884, "If nominated, I will not accept. If elected, I will not serve."
