You're probably thinking of "The Overland Campaign", which lasted six weeks, and involved several battles. This was the first fighting after Grant was promoted to General in Chief and brought to the east, and the weather got warm enough to open the 1864 campaigning season. The campaign included the Battles of The Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg. These were among the worst and bloodiest battles of the war. After each battle Grant tried to move his army around that of Lee, by sliding to his left and then trying to drive for Richmond. Then Lee would get across Grant's path again and force another battle. During the six weeks, Grant lost more men than Lee had in his army, but Grant did not turn back and break off the fighting, as all the previous Union commanders in the east had done, after a defeat in battle. When the six weeks were over, Lee had been forced back into the entrenchments around Richmond and Petersburg, which fixed Lee in one spot and took away his ability to maneuver. Lee had said earlier in the war that if that ever happened, then, it would just be a matter of time. It took another nine months of siege and trench warfare, but in a situation where Lee could not make the audacious moves to outflank his opponent, which he had done so successfully many times, because he was fixed in the defenses of Richmond and Petersburg, Lee was eventually worn down to the point where he could no longer even hold those defenses, and had to make a break for it to the west. Grant caught him at Appomattox and forced the surrender of his army, so this was all of a piece beginning with The Overland Campaign.

NEW RESPONDENT.

I think the battle in question should be rather that of Chattanooga, which lasted from Oct. 26 through Nov. 25,1863, though the elapsed time would be of about 5 and not 6 weeks.

Indeed the question has been put about the duration of a battle and not of a campaign. So, I would invite the author of the question to clear the matter.
