Germany was not happy at all after WWI. This has several reasons. On an economic level, the Peace Treaty at Versailles imposed heavy reparations payments on Germany (the sum of which was not even defined until 1927). Furthermore, The area around the Rhein-Ruhr rivers, Germany's main industrial area, was occupied by France and became a demilitarized zone, with much of the coal production going to France. On a political level, the system of a Republic was imposed upon Germany. Ever since 1815, this system had won a lot of supporters within Germany, but there were still many 'Royalists' which wanted to maintain the Empire. Another very contentious issue was a condition of the Versailles Treaty which forced Germany to accept sole responsibility for the outbreak of World War I. Though Germany was certainly involved in the lead-up to the war, many would argue that attributing sole responsibility to one country is a gross oversimplification. The peace treaty thus bred a strong desire for revanchisme in many, and was commonly refered to as "die Schmach von Versaille" (the ignonimy of Versailles)

The notion that the Treaty of Versailles was the main reason is widespread in 'pop' versions of history in the U.S. However, most historians regard the following as more important: * The effects of the Great Depression on Germany. * The lack of a broadly based conventional conservative party in Germany. * Deadlock in the German political system in 1932-1933.
