Machines? Almost everything that was done in the ancient world was done by hand... The only thing that aided us humans machine wise would possibly different types of pulley systems to move and hoist things around. I think it is rather fascinating that they was able to do all that they did and how they accomplished tasks that was carried out upon a daily life... But, then again... Slavery was another big part in the ancient world... So, technically all the wonders we see today was either done by either one of two different types of people... 1) People that was loyal to do tasks for the leadership or 2) People that opposed that leadership would be forced into slavery
