It was cold in the winter, and VERY warm in the summer. People used outhouses and tossed garbage to the streets below. Disease was rampant and only those who had enough money could travel from the city to the surrounding hills to escape major disease epidemics. There was no electric, and people bathed once a week. This tradition is carried on still today. Also, if you lived in South Philly you were considered a WOP, which is still the case today. Come enjoy the great city and have a big cheesesteak, then go home.
90% of the people in the colonies were farmers. Philadelphia in 1793 was one of the largest cities and a busy port. Living in the city would have been fairly good. Families tended to be large and children often died at young ages. Older children would have gone to school and helped their parents with a business or farm. There were jobs to be found in glass. Textiles, and paper. Over 400 ships a year were built there. The population were immigrants from England, Ireland , Germany, Scotland, Sweden, and Netherlands. The people worked hard, had plenty of food, but no basic comforts. Homes were poorly heated by fireplaces and there was no running water to homes nor bathtubs. Politically the city was one of the key colonies in 1793, and the affects of the revolution would still linger. Some families may have lost a father or son in the war.
The main theme of the book is to "survive". Because of the yellow fever epidemic in 1793 in Philadelphia its hard for Maddie (14 year old girl and main character) to survive and live through it.
