The back story is that King Richard the Lionhearted went to the Crusades to fight. He was on his way home when Duke Leopold of Austria captured him in Venice and held him for ransom of 150,000 marks. Richard's brother, Prince John raised taxes to raise the ransom. John was no fan of Richard. He tried to scheme against Richard while Richard was still alive. When Richard died, John became king. He went to war against Philip II of France and lost the lands in continental France. John had become unpopular with many of the nobles of England and disliked for his taxes.
