In the book To Be A Slave there are first hand accounts taken from slaves about this. They tell about people dying each night, that they are chained together, that there is little food and water. One accounts that a woman with a small baby while on the deck decided she would rather die than be a slave so she threw herself overboard holding the baby. They drowned. What these people experienced was inhumane and cruel.
