During WW2 John Kennedy was a navy lieutenant and captain of a patrol torpedo boat named PT 109. In late 1943 a Japanese destroyer ran over his boat sending his 10 injured men into dark waters. He single handedly saved his crew by taking them to a nearby island for safety. For his act of bravery he won the Congressional Medal of Honor. He injured his back, and risked his own life for their safety. All survived.
