During the Australian goldrush, many aboriginal people were displaced from their traditional hunting lands, and forced to move elsewhere, severing their very close connection to their own specific lands. Aborigines were not interested in gold: it couldn't be eaten and it served no purpose for them. However, many of the aboriginal people found that they could work for simple foods on sheep stations and cattle stations that had been abandoned by the male workers. Thus, this time saw a little more of the absorption of Aborigines into white society.

∙ 13y agoAborigines were not remotely interested in gold itself. It could not be worn or eaten, so as far as they were concerned, white man was crazy for spending all his time digging it out.
However, the Aborigines did see the value in offering their assistance in return for tobacco, tea, clothing and general foodstuffs. They provided cheap labour. Some of them became valued members of the police force, as their skills at tracking bushrangers and thieves were legendary.
