Almost all the men and boys went to war. Women took over the homefront, working as truckers, machinists, riveters, farm workers, ,aircraft builders and many other jobs. Food was rationed and not much was around. Americans and Canadians appeared all over Britain, hundreds of airfields and thousands of aircraft suddenly appeared.

World War II lasted 6 years and 1 day from September 1st, 1939 with the German invasion of Poland, to September 2nd, 1945 with the forced Japanese surrender in the Pacific. Quite a lot happened in the UK in those 6 years. Much of the UK was damaged by bombing, and soldiers from the UK were wounded and killed. A large number of US, Canadian, Free French and Free Polish soldiers were based in the UK. There were shortages of food, fuel and everyday items due to the war.
