It would take a long time to fully answer a question like this. In 1900 the dollar was sound. There was no inflation. It prices were lower than they were in 1800. In 1900 it only took 50 cents to buy what would have cost $1 in 1800. To bad they didn't keep that up. If they had it would only cost 25 cents today instead of $10.

In tidewater Virginia it was not hard to get around in 1900. Roads were poor but you could travel everywhere by steamboat. Steamboats connected every town that was on a river. Even if someone lived on a farm on the James River that had no pier they could get some one to take them out in the river in a row boat. The steamer would stop and the crew would pull them up on board. The name of that steamer was the Pocahontas. At Key West Florida I talked with a man lived on Key West before the railroad came there. I asked him if they felt isolated. He said no at that time you could get a ship all the way to New York for $25.
