In terms of general societal organization, most of Arabia was divided in numerous minor kingdoms/principalities and far many more areas run by local tribes headed by sheikhs (elders) and hakams (arbitrators). War and hostility was quite common between the nomadic tribes and the sedentary tribes and kingdoms. There were skirmishes over territory, merchandise, and food. One of the primary art forms in Arabia at the time was poetry and one of the few generally-accepted reasons for a ceasefire was a poetry competition.
People of Arabian Peninsula were not monotheist before the emergence of Islam. They were worshiping idols as partners to Allah (or God in English).
