Slaves, starting from the early 1619 to 1860, had very poor housing conditions, wore ripped and dirty clothes, and did not have as much power as white people did. They had to work in fields all day with sore backs for the white plantation owners or rich white farmers. Slave mothers' sons and daughters sometimes were sold to other families for no reason. Many slaves rebelled towards their owners for many years, and sometimes they burned their owner's houses, destroyed the crops and livestock. Some slaves in the 1800s, like Nat Turner protested against his white owners and decided to arm every black worker with rifles, knives, and axes. A slave who escaped was going to be mauled by a pack of dogs, whipped, or shot by white owners. Frederick Douglass in 1831 was a runaway slave who went to abolitionists in the north was so angry that his voice was like thunder when he gave his speech. Many people laughed at the white owners and then cried when he described how life was like as slavery. Finally, in 1850, Dred Scott made the Civil War happen when the Dred Scott Act called for the Union Army to march in Virginia to meet with General Robert Lee's southern Army.
