It would have been a struggle from day to day. While the colonists did bring supplies with them they would have had to provide for themselves in terms of food, fresh water, wood for cooking and heating. They did get some help from the natives but it was a time of drought and crops were not quite so plentiful as everyone would have liked. Roanoke Island is a small island with few sources of fresh water. The colonists would have had to collect rainwater. The waters surrounding the island provided fish and shellfish (oyster, crab) and the land provided opportunitites for hunting rabbit, small game , birds and deer. The mainland provided opportunities for hunting larger game, including bear, but the colonists had to cross water from the island to the mainland. The colonists also had to provide their own shelter. They built simple dwellings using local materials.
