The term Manifest Destiny was coined in 1845 by John O'Sullivan to describe a commonly-held belief that America was destined to extend from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.
It has three central tenets:
1. A belief in American Exceptionalism
2. A desire to spread American-style 'republican democracy' throughout the continent.
3. A belief that God had ordained this mission.
Manifest Destiny was used a casus belli for war against Mexico and a challenge to British claims to Oregon.
