Married life was different to that of today. In 1500if your wife was a nagger the husband would be able to swap wife's(wife swap). Also they could beat you in front of your village. This is different today because you can not swap wife's with other people and today we cannot beat up or lovers.

Contrary to popular belief, marriages in the middle ages were very simple. There were rarely very large ceremonies and celebrations, and if there were then it depended upon the social status of the bride and groom.

For those lower down the hierarchical scale, marriages were mostly held in secret, and consisted of a mere agreement between the two to be married or a contract which highlighted the rights of the groom and bride. Separations occurred but there were no legal divorces, however marriage could also sometimes be annulled.

It wasn't until the 16th century that laws came into place that priests were required to perform the betrothal ceremony. This new adjustment of marriages occurred at the Council of Trent.
