Mary Hays, the likely name of the legendary woman soldier, was a camp follower whose husband was serving in the artillery under George Washington. During a battle, she and other women were water carriers, bringing water to thirsty soldiers and to cool the cannon barrels. When she helped man a cannon during the Battle of Monmouth, she earned a battlefield NCO warrant from a surprised but impressed Washington.
