Hamilton Hume and William Hovell were two significant explorers in early Australia. Several features in the southeastern region of Australia are named after either Hume or Hovell., although Hume, being the Australian-born of the two explorers, seems to have had more places named after him.
Possibly the best known is the Hume Highway, which runs from Sydney to Canberra and approximates the route taken southwest by Hume and Hovell. In Canberra, there is the suburb of Hume, while the City of Hume is a Local Government Area in Victoria, in the northern suburbs of Melbourne. The Greater Hume Shire Council is a Local Government Area of New South Wales, Australia, incorporating the towns of Culcairn and most of Holbrook. The Division of Hume is an Electoral Division in NSW, just north of the ACT.
Lake Hume is an artificial lake on the Murray River, near Albury, formed by the damming of the Murray. It is interesting to note that, originally, the Murray River was named the Hume River. Sturt, who charted the river five years later, renamed it the Murray.
Named after William Hovell is William Hovell Drive, the road between Belconnen and North Canberra. Lake William Hovell is an artificial lake formed by the damming of the King River in Victoria.
The Hume Highway in Australia was named after explorers Hamilton Hume and William Hovell, who were the first European explorers to travel between Sydney and Melbourne in 1824.
Hamilton Hume was born on 19 June 1797. William Hovell was born on 26 April 1786.
William Hovell, together with Hamilton Hume, explored the southeastern part of Australia, in an attempt to find an overland route from Sydney to Port Phillip. During this expedition, Hume and Hovell crossed the Murrumbidgee River, discovered the Murray River (which they named the Hume), as well as rivers such as the Mitta Mitta and the Kiewa.
Ovens River, Named by Hamilton Hume and William Hovell after exploring the area in 1824
In Hume and Hovell's epedition of 1824, Hovell was regarded as the leader. For many years, the expedition was referred to as the Hovell and Hume expedition. This was only because he financed the expedition. Australian-born Hamilton Hume had the greater bush skills.

Hamilton Hume was an Australian explorer who is credited with discovering and exploring various parts of Australia. He is best known for his exploration and opening up of inland Australia, particularly along the Murray River region. Hume also discovered new overland routes, which greatly contributed to the expansion of European settlement in Australia.
The main highway between Melbourne and Sydney is the Hume Highway, named after Australian-born explorer Hamilton Hume who, together with William Hovell, explored between the Yass Plains and Port Phillip Bay in 1824.

Hamilton Hume did not discover the Hume Highway. This road was built after Hume and his companion William Hovell found a route from Sydney to Port Phillip Bay, and it was named in honour of Hume, being an Australian-born explorer.Hume and Hovell were the first white men to sight and name the "Hume River", though it was later renamed by Sturt as the Murray River. they were the first to sight the Australian Alps, and they also discovered a number of rivers, including:Kiewa RiverMitta RiverOvens RiverKing RiverBroken RiverGoulburn RiverPrior to this expedition, Hume had also discovered the rich and fertile Goulburn Plains.
William Hovell only explored overland on the one journey with Hamilton Hume. However, he was an ex-sea captain, and made many trade journeys along the New South Wales coast and to New Zealand.
The question is incorrect. The Murray River was discovered by Australian-born explorer Hamilton Hume and his English companion William Hovell in 1824, but they named it the Hume River. Captain Charles Sturt "rediscovered" the river in 1829, and he renamed it the Murray River.
Hamilton Hume and William Hovell explored southwest from Sydney, travelling overland down through the region now known as Victoria, and to Corio Bay, not far from Port Phillip Bay. Hume and Hovell discovered and mapped numerous rivers in what is now Victoria, adding to the knowledge of inland Australia.
