He was the cupbearer for the Emperor of Persia (Medo-Persia). This is in some ways a minor official, but had great power, and was a close confident to the emperor. Since the cupbearer protected the emperor from being poisoned (poison being a common assassination tool in the Middle East at that time), he was greatly trusted.

Nehemiah was granted temporary leave of duties to rebuild the walls of the city of Jerusalem. After this he returned to his duties. However, years later, Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem, but this time with the new occupation of regional governor.

The book of Nehemiah (in the Holy Bible) gives his 1st person account of his service to the emperor and to God.
