Before 1804, instead of each elector voting for one person for president and one person for vice president, each elector voted for two people for president. Whoever ended up with the second-highest number of votes was the vice president. In 1796, John Adams' opponent, Thomas Jefferson, received more votes than Adams' running mate, Thomas Pinckney. Therefore, while John Adams was President, the Vice President was his political opponent rather than his running mate.

Another noteworthy fact is that in the most recent congressional apportionment before 1796, Massachusetts received 30% more House seats than the maximum number that could have been legally apportioned to it based on the 101 total House seats that were apportioned to the thirteen states that were states in 1790 and on the 1790 Census totals. As a result, they had 23% more electors than they legally could have had. Likewise, Maryland, North Carolina and South Carolina each received one less House seat, and therefore had one less elector, than the minimums that would have been legal. If 100% of the maximum number of electors that Massachusetts should have had voted for Adams, all else being the same, he would have needed two additional votes for an absolute majority. It is fairly likely that the additional elector that Maryland should have had might have voted for Adams. However, 83% of the electors that North Carolina did have voted for Jefferson with only 17% voting for Adams, and 100% of South Carolina's electors had voted for Jefferson. So if the congressional apportionment of the 1790s had been done fairly, while it is possible that John Adams of Massachusetts could have been elected president, it is quite a bit more likely that Thomas Jefferson would have been the second President, and John Adams would have served a third consecutive term as Vice President.
