Thus, they laid the foundation for the spread of Orthodox Christianity though Slav Eastern Europe by missionaries. In 998 Vladimir the Great, grand prince of Kiev, converted to Christianity in order to marry the sister of the Byzantine emperor and form an alliance with the Byzantines. He converted the Rus of Kiev and this propelled the Christianisation of all of Russia.
