Try the Battle of the Crater, at the Siege of Petersburg in 1864. The Pennsylvania miners blew the Confederates off the ridge. But Grant (and/or Meade) aborted the mission, apparently because they were nervous about the black brigade who had been fully rehearsed for the attack, and ordered the luckless Burnside to send in a white brigade - unrehearsed - who were cut to bits.
