While he would have liked to have been remembered for his "great society" which brought us medicare, the civil rights act, and other such programs to help the poor, the unfortunate truth is he will probably always be remembered as the president that ramped up the Vietnam War. As long as there are Vietnam era people still alive he will be remembered as the president that fully commited American troops to the Vietnam conflict that resulted in over 50,000 American troops being killed. There were riots in the streets of America protesting the war. The country was pretty much on edge over the whole issue.
