Michelle (Robinson) Obama was born into a lower-middle class family, her father, with whom she was very close, worked hard but he did not make a lot of money, and he was also very ill with multiple sclerosis. When she was growing up, although things had improved for black people, society still had lower expectations for black students; it was not expected that she would become a lawyer or a businesswoman (but she did become both of those things, proving her detractors wrong).
