Dirt along the Cambodian border was often red; especially in II Corps (Central Highlands) region in South Vietnam; e.g. near Firebase Oasis, which was along the border. US Patton tanks dragging dead Pattons behind them were covered in red dirt, including the driver in the towing tank.

The only big lesson learned was North Vietnam was not invaded. During the Korean War, N. Korea was invaded; that brought in Red China. That strategy was not repeated in the Viet War.
