Germany had been preparing for war long before 1914. In fact, Germany had started drawing up a plan for war - the Schlieffen Plan - in 1897. It took nine years to finalise, but it was based on the theory that Germany would be at war with France and Russia at the same time. It did not prepare for many of the events that occured in July and August 1914. It was based on the belief that, if the country went to war, Germany would be faced with a war on two frontswith France and Russia.
This map shows the war faced by Germany on two fronts
The plan assumed that France was weak and could be beaten quickly, and thatRussia was much stronger, but would take longer to mobilise its army.
The plan began to go wrong on 30 July 1914, when Russia mobilised its army, but France did not. Germany was forced to invent a pretext to declare war on France (3 August 1914).
Things got worse when Britain declared war on Germany on 4 August 1914 because, in a Treaty of 1839, Britain had promised to defend Belgium.

Well as you know that there were several allinaces inside Europe with the triple alliance between Germany Italy and Austria-Hungary and the alliances between France and Germany. when the Germans started the schliffen plan they took over belgium which in turn Britain came into the frame the Americans soon came and canadiens which deserve a honourable mention as when troops ran away from gas they bravely sacrificede themselves. In the end Germany was surrounded when Italy stopped there alliance with them and soon were outnumbered.

The military plan used by the north is the Anaconda Plan or Scott's Great Snake.
The Plan they used worked in conjunction with plan 17 (the French's Plan) The British established the B.E.F The British expeditionary force Their plan was to sail across the channel and get to Belgium as quick as possible. To defend the flat land that Germany's Schliffen plan was meant to march through. Other than alot of stalemate in the trenches Not much happened as far as i can remember
Many statements could summarize the Schlieffen Plan that Germany created to prepare for a two-front war. One would be that it was a way of showing his people that WWI was lost because it was a two-front war, and that WWII would not be the same.

The Germans were mad about Article 231, the so called War Guild clause, which declared Germany was responsible for starting World War I. The treaty ordered Germany to pay reparations for all damages that the Allied governments and their people had sustained as a result of the war. They also had to reduce its army to 100,000 men, cut back its navy, and eliminate its air force. They had to give back Alsace and Lorraine and also sections of eastern Germany were awarded to a new Polish state. Hope this helped! Sources: Glencoe World History book.
