The average price of a slave in the 1850's was $1500.00. In today's money that is almost $200000.00! If you had a $200,000.00 Ferrari you would take excellent care of it. So was the case of 99% of all slaves. They had shelter, were well fed and treated. Contrary to public opinion, families were kept together. I'm not defending slavery, I'm just telling the well documented truth. Most people only hear what happened to the other 1% that were horribly treated.
