Miguel de Cervantes is often credited with developing the art of short story-writing in Spain, thanks to his 12 short pieces in Novelas ejemplares, published in 1613. These 12 tales of piracy, Gypsies, and adventure were thought to have been inspired by some of his own exploits on the seas. Cervantes fought in the naval Battle of Lepanto in 1571; shot three times, he was left permanently maimed in his left hand. That didn't stop him, though, from returning to the navy. In 1575, he and several others were captured by Barbary pirates. Cervantes lived in captivity for five years, until he was released in exchange for ransom paid by his family and others.
