News networks released very sketchy information about D-Day, much of their news came from German & French radio broadcasts about the invasion. The news was broadcast across the US. If you read "The Bedford Boys", it gives a first-hand account of how the news was received back home. They responded by calling for prayer at the local churches, canceling all Baseball games and entertainment, such as dances. The people in this town that knew they had sons and fathers preparing for the invasion would meet and compare any news they could find. For weeks, they would greet each other in the street with "Have you heard any news from your son?". It seems that the impact of the D-Day invasion was almost the same as when the bombing of Pearl Harbor was announced. Today it could be compared to the day of the terrorist attack on the twin towers.

During D-Day, American soldiers played many important roles that helped determine the outcome of the invasion. The Americans participated in the landing and invasion of the beach, American ships and planes bombarded the beaches providing support to the invaders, and American parachuters attacked German installments and had been before the invasion even begun.

The Normandy invasion began with overnight parachute and glider landings, massive air attacks, naval bombardments, an early morning amphibious landing and during the evening the remaining elements of the parachute divisions landed. The "D-Day" forces deployed from bases along the south coast of England, the most important of these being Portsmouth.

The beaches on which the Americans landed were Omaha and Utah. Utah was on the extreme right flank of all the beachheads. Omaha was the most hotly contested of the five beaches. The Americans there landed opposite Nazi troops who were conducting training exercises geared toward repelling a seaborne invasion.

The allies were the ones who stormed the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. Each beach had a different mixture of Allied troops.

Beaches: Sword, Gold, Utah, Omaha, and Juno

They used air and amphibious landings meaning planes and ships.
