The British upper classes were pleased to see America split in two, as it had become a fast-growing economic rival. Some of the older Tories were still sulking about the American Revolution, and wanted to see a bit of 'trouble in paradise'. There was an official movement in favour of granting recognition to the Confederacy and sending military aid.

The cotton workers in Lancashire were solidly against slavery, and were willing to sacrifice their jobs, rather than lend support to pro-Confederate action.

Through the summer of 1862, Parliament was ready to back the Confederacy, if the newly-promoted General Robert E. Lee could succeed in invading the North. When the Union unexpectedly won the Battle of Antietam, Lincoln had enough credibility to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, and free nations abroad could no longer aid the South without looking pro-slavery themselves.

British intervention was never high on the agenda after that. so we are not slaves

Who did the South look to for aid during the Civil War?

The British, or more generally any foreign aid from countries which imported Southern cotton.
